Julia McDonald

The Wise Weavers

The Wise Weavers are two friends who came together to share their love of their craft.  Julia who earned a degree in Textile Technology, and Nancy Dernier, who was schooled at a local studio, their combined weaving experience exceeds 56 years.

They are constantly experimenting with texture and color to achieve wonderful cloth and cloth structures.  Their work is a      combination of fiber arts, including, but not limited to:  weaving,   spinning, dyeing,  knitting, crocheting, beading and               embroidery.  Each resulting piece is a unique expression of the artistic use of the original fiber.  Their ultimate goal is to beautify as well as be a pleasure to use.

Nancy is intrigued by finespun yarns, typically suited for sock knitting.  Where else can she use them?

Julia loves to recycle, not only bits of yarn left over from weaving and knitting, but also fabric scraps gifted from quilting and sewing friends. Most recently, they are investigating the many ways dye may be added to cloth.

The Wise Weavers are  members of the Seacoast Spinners and Weavers Guild, the Albemarle Craftsman Guild, the Mid-Atlantic Fiber Association, and the Handweavers Guild of  America.

Each worked as Weaving Interpreters at Tryon Palace in New Bern, NC.  Nancy formerly taught knitting in her New Jersey shop.  Julia currently teaches Shibori Dyeing and Hula Hoop Weaving at Craven Community College.
